March 28, 2012: This installment of the Heyman Center's "Money Series" featured Gillian Tett, US managing editor of the Financial Times, where she oversees global coverage of the financial markets. In March 2009 she was Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards. In June 2009 her book
Fool’s Gold won Financial Book of the Year at the inaugural Spear’s Book Awards.
December 7, 2011: As part of the Heyman Center's Writing Lives Series, Hisham Matar, author of the Man Booker shortlisted novel "In the Country of Men", and more recently, "Anatomy of a Disappearance", spoke on "Literature, Exile, and the 'Arab Spring.'" 's Writing Lives Series. Bashir Abu-Manneh of Barnard College, served as interlocutor.
November 9, 2011: Part of the Heyman Center's Money Series, "The Global Minotaur: The Crash of 2008 and the Euro-Zone Crisis in Historical Perspective" featured Yanis Varoufakis, Professor of Economics at the University of Athens. Responding was Justin Fox, Editorial Director of the Harvard Business Review Group.
February 10, 2011: Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan, Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, Mona El-Ghobashy, Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at Barnard College, and Jean-Pierre Filiu, Associate Professor at Sciences Po, Paris, spoke on the continuing political developments in Egypt. This talk was moderated by Saskia Sassen, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University.
November 10, 2010: Terry Eagleton, Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster University, UK, speaks on "The New Atheism and the War on Terror."
October 19, 2010: Discussion centered on topics raised by Eric Foner's new book, "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery." Panelists included Ira Berlin, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, David Brion Davis, Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, Robin Blackburn, Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, UK, and Eric Foner, Dewitt Clinton Professor of History.
April 22, 2010: Renowned author Jamaica Kincaid gave a reading, followed by an interview with Saidiya Hartman, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
April 14, 2010: Salman Rushdie, David Ignatius, Michael Schudson, and Lee C. Bollinger spoke on issues related to President Bollinger's recent book, "Uninhibited, Robust, and Wide-Open: A Free Press for a New Century". Michael Doyle chaired the discussion.
December 3, 2009: Noam Chomsky delivered the Fifth Annual Edward Said Memorial Lecture titled "The Unipolar Moment and the Culture of Imperialism."
